Current music:"She Bangs the Drum" - the Stone Roses
Entry tags:logan-wolf, philadelphia, philly, twenty branches and a bird

edited from a comment I made to logan on his webpage
Twenty branches and a bird are all that separate me from the rushing street below. Head covered and eyes traced with want I enter the city as if it were a confessional. The man on the corner gives me cake in a brown bag; the Turkish teenager at the market puts free figs and pomegranates in the same bag. I return home to lick fruit and frosting residue from my fingers, hungrily eating on the living room floor, eating like a refugee, eating like someone who is finally free. (And missing my brother, my light, logan.)

The noon-time light is a fist battering at me, wrapped in snatches of bluebird sky. This is not the endless, Persian blue of my Arizona, but a subtle, gentler blue, one that promises colder weather and flirting with snowflakes on the sidewalk and streets below. I wring out the restlessness in my muscles by dancing to ‘eighties music in between searching and calling for employment. I don’t know what to do with myself when I’m not working sixty hours a week and hatching schemes. My restlessness writes a last will and testament because my hope has larger teeth. One will soon murder the other.

This hope for a job burns my hands and breasts; at night, I gnash my teeth and kick away the covers. My pockets collect receipts, expensive lipsticks, and pieces of the sky I’ve snatched for myself. I consider doing a barefooted dance for a job and realise I no longer know where the grassy areas are. I must change this. What then, am I, if I am not a daughter and tale-spinner born of change?

Nondescript, your Jane Doe

I have a hard time inagining you in the middle of a city.

I have an easy time imagining you leaving a toxic place on your own terms in your own time. Good for you.

I believe a job will come. I hope it comes sooner, rather than later.

I really love reading your entries. AZ misses you, but wishes you well. I'll post my teen-age AZ letter/journal entry for you tonight- for some reason this reminded me of it.

Thank you for your wonderful comment, by the way, on my almost have cancer post. I don't seem to have enough time for the gratitude I feel for everyone. That needs to change.

God, I love the way you write. It gives me promises of seeing and translating real onto paper.

Hey jewel, i do absolutely zero on livejournal except for write my own journal occasionally, and you're only on my friends list cos i added you after reading something by you from Hilary Carlip's website ages ago.
I just had a look at your journal out of curiousity. And it occurred to me that i think i have a possible job offer for you - if you're interested, still looking, and if my editor agrees. It's freelance writing, it's not the most interesting stuff ever, but it's pretty well paid (we're based in London, UK, so the dollar-to-pound ratio would work) and fairly steady over the next couple of months. It's business journalism - I won't write too much on here but if you're interested i can message you far more details.
I work for a careers information publisher (actually fairly well-known in the states), and we write in-depth profiles of big european firms (well, 1000 words per profile-ish)...in fairly boring sectors, like banking, consulting, engineering...we then put them in books and publish them. i've just been made assistant editor and i'm hiring freelancers who can WRITE. As in, who can crunch through business journalism but who have eloquence and a bit of style. So i permanently have my eye out for good writers who are looking for work. most freelancers are utterly useless. there work requires tons of internet research, and it can be a slog, but as far as freelance writing jobs go, aside from the obvious limits business journalism puts on your imagination, it's a goody. And obviously, it can be done remotely, otherwise i wouldn't be messaging you.
Okay - enough for this message. If it sounds vaguely feasible, please get in touch. is there a messaging thing on livejournal? im all confused with Facebook. i'd also have to verify with my bosses it's okay to hire and pay someone in the states but i'm pretty much in charge of hiring freelancers - and as the HQ's in NY they're a fairly fluid company when it comes to such things.
Let me know if you're interested and we can discuss more!
eli

Eli,

I sent you a response through the LJ message service, but was unsure of whether you'd received it or not. In any case, I said that your offer sounded intriguing. As a beggar (I wasn't joking about only having twenty-two dollars to my name), I would rather do this sooner rather than later. My E-mail is astreetfaery@aol.com. Anything more we can discuss can be done there. Just let me know and thank you for the opportunity.

Jewel

Bella, I'm so glad you're back and that you've found a place to flower again.

When all the world seems a hateful, cynical place you give me hope.
